The Zillertal takes its name from the river of the same name, the Ziller, which flows through the valley from south to north and flows into the Inn. Only 40 kilometers from Innsbruck, the Zillertal is very easy to reach. The broad valley belongs to the Austrian state of Tyrol. 32 municipalities offer tourists a varied and relaxing vacation in nature, surrounded by several three-thousand-metre peaks. While skiers conquer the valley in winter, the Zillertal also promises a varied vacation in summer. Hiking, climbing, biking and paragliding are just some of the sporting activities on offer here.
And since this year, golfers have also been getting their money's worth: The first golf course in the Zillertal was built in Udens in 2013. On an area of 65 hectares, surrounded by an impressive mountain backdrop, golfers can tee off, putt, compete for their handicap and enjoy nature at the same time. The first nine holes of the course are currently open, and all 18 holes should be playable from July 1, 2014. The Udens golf course also offers a driving range and a practice area. The Achensee "Pertisau" golf course, the Achenkirch golf club and the Ellmau golf club are all within easy reach of the Zillertal. However, you have to plan for travel times of between 15 and 40 minutes.
Although the Zillertal has long been developed for tourism, tradition and customs are still upheld here. Holidaymakers can experience this at brass band concerts, folk theater performances, music evenings and morning pints with zither and accordion or music hikes.
The experience of nature is the top priority for all activities in the Zillertal. Hikers have around 1000 kilometers of hiking trails at their disposal. There is something for everyone: whether it's a leisurely themed hike, nature trails, alpine or summit hikes. If you want to be transported directly to the mountains, you can take one of the 12 mountain railroads to the top. Those who don't want to set off on their own can simply book a guided hiking tour.
Mountain bikers and cyclists can pedal along around 800 kilometers of well-maintained trails. The 30-kilometre Zillertal Cycle Path is ideal for families. If you prefer something more challenging and are on a racing bike saddle, choose the Zillertal High Road or the Gerlos Pass Road.
The Zillertal offers the right excursion destination for every age and interest group. The Zillertal Adventure Dairy or the various schnapps distilleries are steeped in tradition. A special kind of nature experience is taking part in a cattle drive. If you like going to museums, the Tiroler Bauernhöfe Museum is the place for you.
The weather in the Alps is very pleasant in summer. The best time of year is from May to September. In May, the Zillertal welcomes the summer with the "Open Valley Days". Temperatures range between 10 and 25 degrees in summer. July has the most hours of sunshine - but also the most rainy days. Hikers, golfers and cyclists should therefore always be prepared for a shower.
If you want to travel to the Zillertal by train, travel to Jenbach/Tyrol and from there take the Zillertalbahn to the Mayrhofen terminus. From there, you can take a bus to all the towns in the Zillertal. From Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Hildesheim, take the motorail train to Munich or Innsbruck. From there, take the A12 towards Kufstein as far as the Zillertal.
Once you have arrived, you can look forward to delicious specialties in the Zillertal. In addition to the well-known and tasty Tyrolean cuisine, the Zillertal also offers fantastic mountain cheese made from raw milk, tasty fruit brandies and traditional Zillertal beer.
