Styria is the second largest federal state in Austria and is divided into the three regions of Upper, Western and Eastern Styria. The landscape of Upper Styria is very mountainous and includes the alpine mountain ranges of the Niedere Tauern, the Eisenerz Alps and the Fischbach Alps between the river valleys of the Enns in the north and the Mur in the south. The Dachstein, the highest mountain in Styria, is also located in the northernmost of the three regions. While Western Styria comprises the Randalpine areas west of the Mur, Eastern Styria consists of the hilly landscape of the Alpine foothills. Between Western and Eastern Styria on the banks of the Mur lies the provincial capital of Graz, Austria's second largest city after Vienna. Styria is also known as the green heart of Austria, as two thirds of the generally natural and predominantly scenic province is covered by forests.
Styria's unique landscape also makes the region so attractive for golf. Whether mighty mountain giants, dense forests and rushing torrents in the Alps or gently undulating hilly landscapes, picturesque vineyards and magnificent castles in the south-eastern Alpine foothills - the unique backdrop around the courses makes golf in Styria an extraordinary experience. But there is also no shortage of enjoyment and challenge on the strikingly harmonious and particularly attractive golf courses, which are integrated into the natural surroundings and are varied in terms of play. These special prospects for an unforgettable golfing experience attract numerous fans of the traditional ball sport to Styria every year. And yet golf has only existed in Styria for a few decades, as it was only in 1964 that the Murhof Golf Club opened the first 9-hole course in the region. Today, over 20 golf courses in Styria invite you to play golf in beautiful scenic surroundings, making the sport increasingly important for tourism and the region's economy after winter sports and hiking.
