Idyllic mountain and lake landscapes, blooming alpine meadows and fresh air - this is how the Austrian province of Salzburg is known; it has always been a tourist magnet, not least because of its geographical and cultural diversity. Nestled between Tyrol and Styria, Salzburg, famous in the past for its gold and salt resources, attracts a wide range of vacationers - from those seeking relaxation to those who love to explore.
Golf enthusiasts in particular have found an attractive destination in Salzburger Land with its good infrastructure and impressive scenery. The numerous golf clubs attract players in exotic locations, for example on a high plateau in the middle of the Alpine mountain landscape. The region's varied fairways, with their alternating hilly terrain and gentle plains, as well as numerous other attractions such as water hazards, guarantee a perfect golfing experience for both professionals and beginners.
Connoisseurs particularly appreciate the long-standing tradition of the courses, such as the popular 18 fairways of the GC Gastein on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, which have been played since 1960, as well as their international progressiveness, such as the golf course of the GC Gut Altentann in Henndorf; the first 18-hole course in Europe. The 18-hole championship course of the GC am Mondsee offers a beautiful design along the Drachensee and a fantastic mountain panorama. Golf tourism is now an integral part of the summer business in Salzburger Land and attracts more visitors every year.
But it's not just golf fans who get their money's worth here. The region's landscape is as diverse as its rituals and customs, some of which are only celebrated in isolated cases. However, the Rupertikirtag, which is celebrated in honor of the patron saint Rupertus on 24 September in the capital city of Salzburg, is known throughout the country and is also the most traditional folk festival in Austria. The cultural city of Salzburg, also known as the "Mozart City" after its most famous son, not only shines with its baroque architecture and a multitude of museums, but also hosts the country's most famous cultural event - the Salzburg Festival - every year from July to the end of August, making it a center for all fans of the performing arts.
But nature lovers won't miss out either. The world-famous Krimml Waterfalls and the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave labyrinth in the world at 40 km long, are popular excursion destinations, as is the Hohe Tauern National Park, which can be reached via the most famous panoramic road, the 48 km long Grossglockner High Alpine Road. In addition, the 185 Salzburg lakes offer numerous water sports opportunities - from sailing and surfing to fishing in the picturesque mountain lakes. Those who prefer to actively learn about the history of the region can take part in a guided tour of the salt mines or try their hand at gold panning in the Rauris Valley.
The Salzburg region is characterized by a diverse climate that caters to all individual preferences. Due to the alpine climate in the mountain regions, the correspondingly long winters are ideal for practicing sports in the snow; the ski season, for example, begins in November and extends into April, followed by the golf season, which usually lasts until late autumn. The summer months are mainly suitable for water sports, as temperatures rarely reach more than 15 °C in spring.
The Salzburg alpine summer is a particular seasonal highlight. Usually from May to October, you can rent one of the popular alpine summer huts, which can be reached via hiking trails or - in the case of limited mobility - via cable cars, and where, in addition to absolute closeness to nature, meals with traditional home cooking are often offered.
This plays a key role in regional cuisine and you can look forward to typical specialties such as Pinzgauer Kasnocken, Bladln, Tennengauer Almkäse or the famous Salzburger Nockerln. In addition, many restaurants offer the opportunity to enjoy typical local delicacies on a purely organic basis.
The travel options are just as varied as the entire region; whether by car, train or plane - Salzburg Airport makes it easier for everyone to start their vacation with an airport shuttle or rental car service.
