The largest cities in Sicily are Palermo, which is also the capital of the Sicilian region, Catania, Messina and Syracuse.
Over 80% of Sicily's surface area is mountainous or hilly. There are flat areas in the south and in the hinterland of Catania. In the north, the Monti Peloritani, the Monti Nebrodi and the Monti Madonie continue the Apennine mountain range. The Monti Iblei rise in the south-east, and the Monti Erei and Monti Sicani inland. The highest mountain to be found in Sicily is Mount Etna with a height of 3345 meters. Etna is also the largest and most active volcano in Europe. The coastline stretches over 1000 km in total. In the north and east there are more rocky coasts, interrupted by numerous bays with sandy beaches. In the south, the land slopes downwards so that there are increasingly longer stretches of coastline with sandy beaches.
Sicily has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are characterized by heat with low humidity and winters are characterized by humid, mild weather conditions. On the coasts, temperatures average 26 °C in summer and 10 °C in winter. The interior of the island is somewhat cooler compared to the coastal areas and the south of Sicily is slightly warmer than the coast.
Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, the island offers a wide range of cultural treasures and sights from all eras thanks to its eventful history and numerous conquests by foreign cultures. If you want to conquer Sicily, you should start with one of the island's most important sights. The volcano Etna attracts thousands of tourists every year. After visiting the volcano, you should visit the surrounding towns, almost all of which belong to the province of Catania. Catania is one of the strongholds of Sicilian Baroque, which is characterized by historic buildings made of volcanic rock. On the south coast of Sicily there are some important temples from the Greek era. The small surrounding islands also have a lot to offer and should not be overlooked during a visit.
