The Sauerland is a low mountain region in Westphalia that stretches between Iserlohn and Marsbach and from north to south between Rüthen and Wenden. The Hochsauerland, which extends around Emslohe, is located in the center of the region, which is characterized by many forest areas and reservoirs and is of great tourist importance.
Numerous climatic health resorts and mountains up to an altitude of 840 meters are connected by wonderful hiking trails. The Bike Arena Sauerland, which offers extensive cycling and mountain bike tours in summer, is replaced in the cold season by the Wintersport Arena Sauerland, which is then the largest winter sports area north of the Alps.
In addition, there are two large leisure parks, several adventure pools and, of course, several golf courses available to all holidaymakers and of course the local population for active pursuits.
There are 16 golf courses in the Sauerland, each embedded in a beautiful landscape. Around a dozen hotels in the 3 to 5-star category invite you to stay during an eventful and relaxing vacation.
Ten different golf clubs in the Sauerland, such as the Golfclub Sauerland e.V. near Arnsberg, founded in 1958, or the Start-Golfclub Schmallenberg, have dedicated themselves to the organization and practice of competitive sports as well as leisure and health sports.
In the Sauerland, golf tourism, like wellness tourism, has developed into a serious competitor to hiking tourism over the past three decades.
Many of the scenic attractions as well as the sights to be found in towns and communities can be hiked on the routes leading through the Sauerland. The Rothaarsteig, for example, which is over 150 kilometers long, has become an Eldorado for trekking enthusiasts and the bison trail near Schmallenberg, which leads over streams and rock formations, promises an encounter with Europe's largest land mammals. The WaldSkulptuerenweg also leads from here to Bad Berleburg. It allows you to encounter sculptures and sculptures by various artists, creating a harmonious connection between nature and art.
As well as being the starting point for numerous hiking trails, Schmallenberg is also a town that will delight climbing enthusiasts with its climbing hall and high ropes course. On the bike course in Bad Fredeburg, children in particular can test and perfect their cycling skills, and the Sauerland can be viewed from above on the sightseeing flights that take place every weekend from Rennefeld airfield.
Water sports enthusiasts, on the other hand, will feel at home on Lake Möhne, which also has a golf course.
The Hanseatic town of Soest tells of its past with its well-preserved town wall, beautiful half-timbered houses and a striking tower silhouette. Werl has a historic old town with two highly interesting museums and a spa park with a salt works. Lippstadt offers a particularly pleasant atmosphere thanks to its combination of tradition and modernity. Its water-rich golf course is quite spectacular.
Regardless of whether you are visiting the Sauerland for its picturesque golf courses or for a generally active vacation, you are sure to make the acquaintance of regional culinary specialties. It doesn't always have to be a "Potthucke" made from baked potato dough and various meat ingredients or a hot "Knochenwurst" with real pieces of bone. A hearty farmer's bread topped with raw milk cheese, accompanied by a glass of beer from one of the well-known local brands or from one of the many small home breweries, is also particularly tasty.
There is little to say about the best time to visit, as the weather here is completely normal for Central Europe, meaning that the well-known open-air season is ideal for a trip from May to September.
Access to the Sauerland by road was and still is associated with some topographical difficulties. However, several freeways, some of which are only partially completed, such as the A4, A45 and A46, lead to this region, and as several regional railroad lines have been closed in recent decades, buses now play the dominant role in regional transport.
