Münsterland is a region in north-western North Rhine-Westphalia that borders the Netherlands to the west and owes its name to the city of Münster, which lies at the center of the region. From Tecklenburger Land to the edge of the Ruhr area and the Dutch border, there are numerous golf courses throughout the region.
Golf in the Münsterland region has a long tradition. The Bentheim Golf Club, for example, has existed since 1950, but the vast majority of golf clubs in the region were founded in the 1990s, as the demand for golf club membership increased disproportionately during this time. Since then, there have been almost thirty golf clubs throughout the Münsterland region, which are integrated into the beautiful Münsterland landscape. Many of these golf clubs have a cooperation agreement with one or more nearby hotels, some of which offer vacationers who want to play golf during their vacations a complete special offer package. These golf fans have another major advantage in Münsterland: there is the Greenfeeverbund Münsterland, an association of the vast majority of Münsterland golf clubs. This association offers all golf club members the opportunity to play golf on the other associated courses. It is only necessary to book in advance almost everywhere.
The park-like landscape of the Münsterland is perfect for golf courses. Due to the predominantly agricultural use, the eye is presented with a largely homogeneous surface consisting of fields, hedgerows, pastures and orchards. The region is best known for its many cycle paths, also known as "Pättkes" in Münsterland dialect. Cycling fans can "experience" the beautiful landscape and the many sights on over 4000 km. There are also themed routes such as the EmsRadweg or perhaps the Hundert-Schlösser-Route. This leads to a large number of castles and manor houses that were built by historical inhabitants of the Münsterland, such as princes or bishops.
Fans of a different kind of saddle also like to come to Münsterland. The region is a true paradise for horse lovers. There are famous riding stables around Münster in particular, from which many a German Olympic champion has emerged. Despite this exclusivity, beginners can also take courses here and explore the Münsterland region on horseback. The annual stallion parade in Warendorf is always a popular event. The Warendorf Riding Route starts here, which you can follow on horseback for over 190 km across the Münsterland. You should also pay a visit to the city of Münster with its historic Prinzipalmarkt and the Lamberti Church with its Anabaptist cages.
Münsterland has a warm, temperate, maritime climate. It tends to be moderately warm in summer and rarely very cold in winter. Winter snow is relatively rare. The Münsterland is an extremely green landscape due to the abundance of moisture. The best time to go there is certainly between May and September, but you can never count on stable weather. However, as the weather is never extreme, some Münsterland golf courses, for example in Coesfeld, are open all year round.
Münsterland is well connected in terms of transport infrastructure. The A1 and A31 motorways cross the region from north to south, while the A30 and A2 motorways run from west to east. The Münsterland is also criss-crossed by a dense rail network, which connects the region with the Ruhr area, as well as with Osnabrück and Hanover. The Münsterland is also easy to reach via the Netherlands. Münster/Osnabrück Airport in Greven is also of great regional importance for business travelers.
A stay in Münsterland also introduces you to the regional cuisine. This tends to be of a hearty nature, with pumpernickel, a very dark brown bread that is baked several times, and Westphalian beer being internationally popular. Dishes such as Pfefferpotthast, a beef dish, and Töttchen, boiled veal with an onion and mustard sauce, are regionally appreciated. Münsterland ham, not very heavily smoked, is also a regional specialty.
