Waters characterize the landscape - and the white-tailed eagle circles majestically over its territory. The geographical center of this landscape lies in the picturesque town of Teterow.
Heiligendamm is Germany's oldest seaside resort, Rügen and Usedom are its largest islands, emperors and aesthetes used to take a cure on the Baltic Sea, nowadays sports stars and film stars come here, most recently Terence Hill. The Italian western hero and a good seven million other guests a year can't be wrong: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is worth a visit! The north-easternmost federal state has become one of the most important tourist destinations in recent years and has long been the most popular summer destination in Germany.
There are rooms in every category: 4* superior hotels, 4* hotels, 3* hotels, guesthouses, private rooms, farms, private vacation apartments, farm vacation apartments and campsites.
It's been a while since Theodor Fontane wrote to his wife Emilie in Berlin in 1863: "... You have peace and fresh air and these two things fill your nerves, heart and lungs with a quiet bliss." This is no longer true everywhere this year, especially not during the high season. But with just 69 inhabitants per 23,180 square kilometers, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern still has all kinds of tranquil places and must-see spots.
A bit of statistics: "MV" is Baltic Sea country, the land of lakes and islands, sea eagles and cranes. A total of 1,712 kilometers of coastline is as much as its neighbors Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony have together: 354 kilometers line the open sea, 1,358 kilometers are accounted for by Bodden and Haff. And "Meck-Pomm" is Germany's sunniest federal state. The German Weather Service has recorded an average of 1,648 hours of sunshine per year since 1982, with 274 hours of sunshine this July alone.
Letter writer Fontane was on Usedom, the "bathtub of Berlin". A recreational "hotspot" for the capital's inhabitants, like the Hamptons for New York. Wilhelm I and II laid their crowned heads here, as did the Austrian KuK monarch Franz Joseph I. Since then, Usedom has had three imperial spas - Bansin, Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck - and, with a twelve-kilometer stretch, Europe's longest beach promenade, which leads to the Polish seaside resort of Swinemünde.
Speaking of crowned heads: Nowhere in Europe is the density of castles and manor houses, parks and gardens higher than in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Starting with the almost "Disney-like" castle in the state capital Schwerin with its charming city center, there are around 2,200 castles and manor houses spread across the state, some beautifully renovated, some in a deep sleep, some already in a state of decay. There are also around 1,200 parks and almost countless brick and stone churches, from the famous minster in Bad Doberan to the village chapel around the corner.
The historic Hanseatic cities of Rostock, Stralsund, Wismar and Greifswald with their beautiful old towns are also a must-see for tourists. Not forgetting Rostock's Warnemünde district with its picturesque captain's houses on the "Alter Strom" and Germany's second largest cruise port after Kiel. And and and ...
The whole thing is embedded in a flat to hilly and always magnificent landscape. Of course, the Baltic Sea dominates all associations: But "MV" also has water in the hinterland. Lots of it. The Müritz, for example, is larger than Germany's share of Lake Constance. With the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Sternberg Lake District at the top of the list of 2,028 lakes, the federal state has a total of 738 square kilometers and 25 percent of Germany's entire lake area.
Most of the surrounding area is pure natural idyll: 84.4 percent of the state's area is either forest or used for agriculture. Three of the 14 German national parks, Müritz, Jasmund and Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, are located in Meck Pomerania.
Around 1,700 hectares of land are also designated for golfers. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern currently has 17 courses, most of which are tourist-oriented.
From Schwerin with WINSTONgolf in the west to Baltic Hills and Balmer See on Usedom on the Polish border, from northern Europe's largest golf resort Fleesensee in the south to Baltic Sea courses such as Wittenbeck near Kühlungsborn, the Warnemünde golf course or the Strelasund golf park in the north: The approximately 360 holes (not counting short courses) attracted over 400,000 golf vacationers in 2012. And the trend is rising.
