Hardly any other island is compared to paradise as often as Mauritius. Anyone who has ever been there will understand why. The stamp-sized island to the east of Madagascar has made everyone dream.
If you look out over the island from one of the extinct volcanoes that rise up inland, you will see a green emerald below you, surrounded by the turquoise-blue Indian Ocean. Beaches as white as alabaster and a circular coral reef frame the enchantingly beautiful island like a precious gem. As far as the eye can see, nature seems to pour out a cornucopia of tropical lushness, with beguiling smells and colors. The island is inhabited by a colorful mixture of peoples from the most diverse backgrounds, which tells of a long, eventful colonial history, the last chapter of which was written by the British. So it's no wonder that golf is firmly rooted in Mauritius.
It may seem like an unusual destination, but Mauritius has long since ceased to be an insider tip among golfers. The island is increasingly becoming a Mecca for German golfers. Some time ago, Mauritius replaced Mallorca as the most popular golf destination. The small dream island in the middle of the Indian Ocean has a total of 13 first-class golf courses to offer. Hardly anywhere else can you find so many great 18-hole championship golf courses in such a small area. Golf hotels with 5 or 6 stars, equipped with all amenities, are standard here. The green fee is already included at many golf hotels. Excellent restaurants, top-class wellness facilities, paradisiacal palm-fringed beaches and the warm hospitality of the Mauritians do the rest.
We spoke to Ryan Dodds, Golf Director at the Heritage Golf Resort in the very south of Mauritius, about playing golf in Mauritius, the excellent course conditions and the difficulties Europeans have with the short game in Mauritius. He also gives his own personal tips for the perfect golf vacation in Mauritius.
Mauritius also offers excellent opportunities for beginners and advanced golfers to play together. There are separate tees for beginners on most golf courses, which are positioned further forward. However, golfers from German-speaking countries should be warned. In Mauritius, golf is played on Bermuda grass (comparable to the golf courses in South Africa), which presents German golfers with some unfamiliar challenges, especially in the short game.
Due to its limited dimensions (the island is just the size of Berlin), Mauritius relies entirely on gentle and high-quality tourism. The Mauritians have succeeded astonishingly well in establishing their island as a first-class destination without compromising the enchanting beauty of their island. Especially in winter, golf trips to Mauritius are becoming increasingly popular with German golfers. Even though it can get very hot in Mauritius, guests are looked after excellently by the locals at the golf club. Wet towels, fresh fruit and refreshing drinks are just a few of the amenities that golf tourists experience in Mauritius. A ride in a golf cart is also standard and highly recommended. This allows you to explore other aspects of Mauritius after your round of golf without being completely exhausted.
The oldest relic of the English is the Gymkhana Golf Club in the interior of the island, founded in 1844. Although it is a private club, guests are also welcome from Monday to Friday. However, the Anahita and Le Touessrok golf courses are undoubtedly among the most spectacular golf courses on the island.
Le Touessrok is located on the offshore islet of Ile aux Cerf, which can be reached in 10 minutes by boat. The rather challenging golf course was designed by golf legend Bernhard Langer and rewards you with breathtaking views of towering volcanic cones and turquoise lagoons. The golf course in the middle of the sea is not considered one of the most spectacular in the world for nothing. The Anahita Golf Course, which is also beautifully situated, was designed by South Africa's showpiece golfer Ernie Els. It became famous not only for its varied fairways, but also for its popular mascot, a hundred-year-old giant tortoise that likes to be fed with fruit.
Even a day without golf offers highlights on this multifaceted island full of scenic contrasts. Whether you stroll through the colorful markets in the lively capital Port Louis or admire old colonial buildings, the metropolis is always worth a visit. Deep-sea fishing, submarine dives to coral reefs and jeep safaris awaken the adventurer in visitors. Nature lovers will get their money's worth in the Black River Georges National Park, the botanical garden or the volcanic lake Grand Bassin, which is considered a sacred place by Indians.
The island state can look back on an extremely eventful history. The Dutch, French and finally the British called Mauritius their own as a colony before it became independent in 1968. Mauritius has no indigenous inhabitants, but the changing colonial rulers brought Africans, Indians and Chinese to the island as workers. The descendants of the immigrants form a colorful mixture of all these cultures.
The tropical climate is pleasant all year round with temperatures of 25-30 degrees, and the main travel season is between November and April. Although rainfall is to be expected, it is usually limited to short showers. During the low season in the European summer, the golf courses are a little more relaxed and the temperatures are slightly milder.
English is the official language, but French is also spoken. Mauritius is a democratic constitutional state with stable political conditions. Left-hand traffic applies on the island. The crime rate is low.
The flight takes around 11 hours and arrives at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, also known colloquially as Plaisence Airport. There are direct flights from Frankfurt. The clock in Mauritius must be set forward by 3 hours, in summer time by 2 hours.
No visa is required for travelers from EU countries. A passport valid for at least 6 months and a return ticket are required to enter the country.
Almost all large golf resorts offer free Wi-Fi access for guests in all parts of the resort, i.e. Internet access is available in the hotel rooms as well as in the restaurants and pools. The golf courses also usually have free WiFi access in the clubhouses. The bandwidth is also high enough so that it is no problem to send photos or videos to your loved ones back home.
The rupee is the means of payment. Due to the poor exchange rate, you should only change money locally. At the airport, hotels and bureaux de change, you can exchange money and cash travellers' cheques in euros and dollars. Major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere (Visa, EC, American Express, Diners Club, etc.).
The roaming charges for Mauritius are considerable. It is cheaper to buy a SIM card from a local provider locally.
The Federal Foreign Office recommends vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A. The risk of malaria is low. Medical care largely meets European standards. Treatment is free of charge for foreigners, but travel health insurance is still recommended.
Mauritius has a different idea of freedom of movement. Holidaymakers should be considerate of customs. When visiting religious sites, it is better not to wear short skirts and pants and to take off your shoes at the entrance. Bathing naked or topless is neither desired nor permitted.
The menu is just as colorful and diverse as its inhabitants, borrowing from all cultures.
