About Lüneburg Heath

It is named after the city of Lüneburg and the area extends into the catchment area of Hanover, Hamburg and Bremen. In the interior of this landscape, extensive heathland has been preserved, as it once covered almost all of northern Germany. This landscape is ideal for the construction of golf courses.

Golf in the Lüneburg Heath

Golf in the Lüneburg Heath has a long tradition in part, but there are also a number of more recent establishments. The Hamburger Land- und Golf-Club Hittfeld e.V., for example, is the oldest club, founded in 1957, as is the British Academy Golf Club from 1962. Most of the golf courses on Lüneburg Heath were established at the end of the 1980s and during the 1990s, when the demand for a course at a golf club increased disproportionately. Since then, there have also been a number of hotels around the golf clubs in Lüneburg Heath that offer special packages for a golf and relaxation vacation in one. There are also some golf clubs that have decided to work together and offer a joint card, for example the Heide-Golf-Card, which allows you to play on eight courses.

The unmistakable nature of the Lüneburg Heath

The Lüneburg Heath is divided into several sub-regions, which have a different surface organization, partly hilly, partly flat, especially in the Hohe Heide many original heathland areas are still preserved. The military training areas, for example Munster, also still contain areas of this type. Despite its name, the Lüneburg Heath also consists to a large extent of forest, mainly pine forests.

Cycling and hiking trails through the heath

The sparsely populated and rural Lüneburg Heath is a popular recreational area for the surrounding cities. More than four million visitors come here every year to experience the unspoiled nature.
Large parts of the region are nature parks and nature reserves. In the nature reserve in the north-east of the Heath, motor traffic is strictly prohibited. You can only get around here by bike or on foot. The Freudenthalweg, a long-distance hiking trail over 150 kilometers long, runs north-south through the Lüneburg Heath. Thematic hiking trails are also being created more and more frequently. Among other things, they lead through bird sanctuaries where you can observe bird populations from observation towers. A number of burial grounds and burial mounds from the Neolithic or Bronze Age are interesting. Various former heath monasteries, which have been converted into ladies' convents, also attract visitors with their interesting works of art. The various amusement parks, such as the Serengeti Park, the bird park or the Heidepark, are a particularly worthwhile destination for children.

The Lüneburg weather

The Lüneburg Heath lies in a temperate Atlantic weather zone, with mild winters and not very warm summers and a year-round chance of rain. The best time for hiking is therefore summer. However, more and more people are also coming in spring to see nature blossom and awaken from its winter torpor.

Transport links

Three highways, the A7, the A27 and the A39, as well as a number of federal highways run through the Lüneburg Heath. By train, visitors can take the Hanover-Hamburg line and from there one of the regional trains to the smaller towns.

Heidschnucken sheep and organic farms

On the menus of almost all good restaurants in the Heath, hungry guests will find some of the region's specialties. The famous sheep, the Heidschnucken, produce excellent meat that is more reminiscent of game than lamb, as the sheep graze all year round. The many heath ponds are home to trout, which enrich the culinary offerings. Buckwheat products are typical of the Lüneburg Heath, as this grain thrives particularly well on the heathland soils. Finally, there are many organic farms in the Lüneburg Heath that produce high-quality fruit and vegetables.
