Lombardy is one of the economically strongest regions in Italy. In the north, the region is enclosed by the Alpine belt. The vast landscape of the Po Valley opens up to the south. The Lombardy region with its capital Milan is divided into 12 provinces.
Lake Maggiore forms the western border of Lombardy. The most scenically spectacular lake in the region is Lake Como with its steeply sloping shores, along which rise enchanting villas and beautiful villages. The mild lake climate has led to the creation of tropical gardens with exotic plants and palm trees. The most famous and largest lake in this region is Lake Garda with its numerous vacation resorts. In contrast, there is the small but very scenic Lake Iseo, with its island of Monteisola between Lake Como and Lake Garda. A vacation on the lakes described above is enjoyment, relaxation and culture all in one. Water sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth in the ideal climate. Those who like it on horseback can explore the foothills of the Alps on horseback or on one of the mountain bike routes.
Milan, the capital of Lombardy, is known as a center of fashion and design. Important international trade fairs are held here and all major international companies have representative offices in Milan and the surrounding area. The historic city centers of Bergamo, Como, Brescia, Pavia, Mantua, Cremona and Monza as well as the small towns on the shores of Lake Como are also worth a visit.
The hiking trails in the northern Italian Alps and Prealps are a popular destination for keen hikers. Tourists can expect a network of well-developed and attractive hiking trails with exceptional views over the Alpine lakes.
