Beautiful Franconia, Bavaria's northernmost region, stretches between the Fichtelgebirge and Spessart, from the Rhön down to the Altmühltal. Tranquil villages, romantic castles, magnificent palaces and many time-honored churches and monasteries adorn an expansive natural landscape with rolling hills, green meadows and idyllic lakes.
Since the 19th century, the sport of golf has spread from Britain across the whole world and, over time, reached Franconia. Whether in Upper, Middle or Lower Franconia, a total of 36 golf clubs in Franconia offer their courses. Whether you want to spend a complete golf vacation or just play occasionally, you are always welcome as a guest player. Extensive, varied courses in natural terrain make golf in Franconia an exquisite pleasure. Historic old towns and lovely vineyards provide a unique backdrop. Franconia's golf courses and many other activities promise an eventful vacation.
Franconia distinguishes itself from the surrounding regions, especially Bavaria, through its cultural characteristics and its own dialect. The traditional costumes with the typical tricorn hat of the men, lovingly decorated Easter fountains and, last but not least, the unique Franconian half-timbered architecture of the villages with their pointed church towers determine the special charm of the region. Numerous hiking and cycling trails in Franconian Switzerland, in the Steigerwald, along the Tauber or Altmühl, swimming opportunities in the Franconian Lake District, famous stalactite caves, e.g. in Pottenstein, bizarre rock formations such as the Luisenburg rock labyrinth in the Fichtelgebirge - Franconia's nature has something to offer everyone. A visit to a genuine Franconian "Kärwa" or a cozy beer garden is the perfect way to round off the day. Amusement parks such as the western town of Kansas City in Plech or the Geiselwind fairytale park, open-air museums such as Bad Windsheim and Fladungen, animal enclosures such as the Hundshaupten Wildlife Park in Egloffstein or the Tambach Castle Wildlife Park near Coburg are all worth a visit. In addition to medieval towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the countless castles, palaces and churches of Franconia are well worth a visit. A visit to the Vierzehnheiligen Basilica near Bad Staffelstein and the fortified church in Kraftshof near Nuremberg should not be missed. History buffs are guaranteed to get their money's worth at the Imperial Castle in Nuremberg, the Würzburg Residence, the Bayreuth Hermitage, the Veste Coburg, the Rosenberg Fortress above Kulmbach and the moated castles of Mespelbrunn and Burghaslach.
Gourmets are not left behind in Franconia either, a culinary journey of discovery is definitely worthwhile. Franconia has much more to offer than the world-famous delicious sausages and gingerbread. Franconian cuisine loves hearty dishes: from crispy Schäuferla or Franconian sauerbraten to baked Aischgründer carp and Blaue Zipfeln or Stadtwurst with music. As a sweet finish, Kirschenmännla or Versoffene Jungfern are extremely popular. In Upper and Middle Franconia, guests enjoy a Seidla (1/2 l) of spicy Franconian beer, in Lower Franconia a Schoppen (1/4 l) of tangy Franconian wine.
Franconia has a temperate, warm continental climate with average rainfall. Extreme weather conditions are extremely rare. The best time to visit for golfers is from May to September.
Franconia can be reached quickly and easily from all directions via the highway. The A 3 from Frankfurt and Passau, the A 9 from Berlin and Munich and the A 6 from Saarbrücken and Prague meet at Nuremberg. In addition, several highways run right through Franconia. Rail travel is also quick and convenient. The most important railroad junctions are Nuremberg, Bayreuth and Würzburg.
