Florida, the Sunshine State, lives up to its name. The sun shines here all year round. Kilometers of beautiful beaches lined with palm trees, deep blue water, gorgeous coral reefs, crystal-clear lakes, impressive waterfalls and beautiful marshlands dominate the landscape. Florida is bathed by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Formerly marshland, Florida has now developed into a popular vacation destination. Natural and bathing paradises, numerous visitor attractions, unique flora and fauna, excellent shopping opportunities and an exciting nightlife leave nothing to be desired. Water sports are also very important in Florida. Whether swimming, surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, snorkeling, diving, boating or fishing, active vacationers get their money's worth.
Florida has now established itself as a mecca for golfers with around 1100 courses. Most of the courses are in very good condition and leave nothing to be desired. You can also play excellent golf here in the fall and winter.
Whether the "PGA National Resort & Spa" in Palm Beach, the Grand Harbor area near Vero Beach, the Marriott Beach Resort on the southern tip of Hutchinson Island, the Greenlinks Golf Resort near Naples or the PGA Village in St. Lucie County northwest of Palm Beach, golf courses that invite you to dream can be found all over Florida.
Florida is home to over 50 state parks, which enjoy great popularity. In the designated areas, which are all protected, visitors can admire Florida's original vegetation. Ichetucknee Springs State Park is located 60 kilometers northwest of Gainesville and impresses with its beautiful landscape. Here you can go tubing on large tires along the crystal-clear Ichetucknee River and enjoy the romantic natural surroundings.
Wakulla Springs State Park is home to one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs, Wakulla Springs. You can explore the unique underwater world of Wakulla Springs on glass-bottom boat tours. The state park is also a popular destination for canoeists and kayakers.
Florida is also known for its numerous theme parks. Mickey Mouse sends his regards at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. Here in the largest amusement park in the world, young and old alike get their money's worth. The resort is home to numerous theme parks, hotels and water parks. Other highlights in Orlando are Sea World and the Universal Orlando Resort.
While the northern part of the state has a humid, subtropical climate, the south has a tropical climate. The best time to visit northern Florida is between March and May, while the winter months of November to February are particularly suitable for visiting southern Florida.
In addition to a number of fast food chains, Florida also offers pure culinary variety. In the north, deep-fried dishes are at the top of the menu, while in the south, grilled dishes are more popular. Fish dishes are very popular everywhere due to the proximity to the water. Florida largemouth bass, a trout perch, is one of the highlights here. If you prefer an unusual culinary treat, you should definitely try an alligator steak, which tastes similar to a piece of beef. The key lime pie is another Florida specialty. It is made with a sponge base and a filling of lime juice and milk.
Of course, you don't want to attract negative attention when visiting Florida. That's why you should observe a few rules: nudism or "toplessness" is prohibited on many beaches in Florida and is punishable by severe fines. Even small children are not allowed to run around naked on the beach and in American restaurants you will be assigned a table by the staff. After eating, it is customary here to clear the table immediately to make room for the next guests.
To enter Florida, you need a machine-readable bordeaux-colored passport that was issued before 26.10.05 and is valid for the duration of your entire stay. Children also need their own passport.
It is of course also possible to enter the country with the new passport (ePassport), which was introduced at the beginning of November 2005 and in which biometric data (a digital photo, and from November 2007 also fingerprints) are stored.
Since 12 January 2009, the United States has switched from paper-based entry forms to the electronic, internet-based "Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)" system. You are obliged to obtain an ESTA authorization at least 72 hours before you travel to the United States by plane or ship. Before entering the USA, the address in the United States and some other personal data must be transmitted online to Homeland Security.
Vacationers from Europe mainly travel to Florida by plane. International flights land in Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami, Tampa or Sanford.
The currency in Florida is the US dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. Foreign currencies are not recognized as a means of payment here. Credit cards such as MasterCard and VISA are accepted almost everywhere in Florida. Traveler's checks are also an easy and secure means of payment. Stores, restaurants and theme parks charge a sales tax of 6 to 7% on the prices quoted.
