The Saxon state capital of Dresden has the status of an internationally renowned city of art and culture, whose tourist highlights are its numerous valuable art collections and historic buildings that have been restored to their former beauty. The city, which lies in a wide valley of the Elbe, also boasts an extremely attractive landscape, ranging from the gentle hills of the Osterzgebirge mountains to the bizarre rock formations of Saxon Switzerland and the vine-covered slopes of the Elbe valley basin near Meissen.
On the outskirts of Dresden's villa district of Bühlau/Weißer Hirsch, the first golf course was created in 1932 on the initiative of the golf club of the same name under the name Dresden - Bad Weißer Hirsch/Bühlau. However, this fell victim to the turmoil of war in 1944. Today there are two golf clubs in Dresden, Dresden Elbflorenz e.V. and Dresden Ullersdorf e.V. Both have an 18-hole golf course. The courses are located in the village of Possendorf to the east of Freital and in the Radeberg district of Ullersdorf. A few kilometers west of Dresden, in a prime scenic location in the village of Herzogswalde, is the public Tharandter Wald Golf Park, a 9-hole course. Two further golf courses are located around 40 to 50 kilometers from Dresden, just over the border with the Czech Republic in the small communities of Janov and Dubi.
Dresden, often referred to as the "Florence on the Elbe", has an almost inexhaustible reservoir of sights for visitors from near and far. Just a glance at the unique silhouette of the city gives an idea of the charms that the city on both sides of the Elbe has to offer. The Frauenkirche and palace, Zwinger and Semperoper, Elbe palaces and the magnificent Pillnitz Palace and Park are among its architectural highlights. Hidden within them are unique art treasures, such as the famous art collection of the Green Vault or the Old Masters Picture Gallery.
Just a famous "stone's throw" away, numerous excursion destinations offer their scenic beauty. In addition to a boat trip to Saxon Switzerland, these include the magnificent baroque gardens in Großsedlitz, the Tharandt Forest, a popular hiking area, and Wesenstein Castle, which towers over the Müglitz valley. Down the Elbe, Germany's oldest castle, Albrechtsburg, with its large museum complex, is well worth a visit, as is the museum of the world-famous State Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen.
Dresden and the surrounding area are worth a visit at any time of year. However, to combine this with a game of golf, the months from October to March should be avoided.
However, this would mean having to do without the delicious Saxon Christmas cookies in the form of Dresdner Stollen or Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen. Otherwise, it is certainly worth trying the original Dresdner Eierschecke or a Saxon Quarkkäulchen as at least an equivalent "substitute".
