The small kingdom between the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France has just 11 million inhabitants and is mainly associated with the European Parliament, the Atomium and delicious chocolates.
But Belgium cannot be reduced to platitudes, as it has a wealth of facets that may surprise some. A multilingual mix of peoples, which borrows from its neighbors not only in terms of language, ensures cultural diversity. The varied natural surroundings do the rest.
Our neighboring country is also becoming increasingly attractive for golfers. No wonder, because there are true golfing paradises to discover here. If you want to play golf in Belgium, you really are spoiled for choice. Golf courses in parks with hundred-year-old giant trees, fairways lined with lakes and greens nestled in forests or rolling hills are not uncommon. What's more, you can tee off here at affordable prices and the courses are not overcrowded, even in the high season. When playing golf in Belgium, fans of the greens can put their skills to the test on around 80 well-maintained courses.
Golf is becoming increasingly popular in Belgium. Ever since Belgian golf pro Nicolas Colsaerts took part in the Ryder Cup, golf has been the talk of the town. Not surprisingly, golf was voted sport of the year in Flanders in 2013. The hype surrounding golf is also reflected in the numbers. There are more than 50,000 golfers in the small Benelux country. Although golf is not as deeply rooted in Belgium as in the typical golfing nations, the foundation stone for golf was laid back in 1899 with the founding of the Royal Zoute Golf Club. However, the majority of golf courses were built in the late 80s and early 90s.
More than half of the golf clubs are located in Flanders, but there is also excellent golf just outside Brussels. In the rolling hills of Walloon Brabant, there are numerous golf clubs within a radius of just a few kilometers. Exclusive golf hotels in elegant surroundings await golfers who want to be pampered. The clubs are often located behind historic walls. Former aristocratic country estates and castles form the ideal backdrop for park-like, breathtakingly beautiful golf courses. The Royal Waterloo Golf Club has chosen a more than unusual location, as the legendary Battle of Waterloo took place where golfers putt and pitch today. More history is not possible.
The Limburg Golf and Country Club is particularly popular with golfers. The championship course of medium difficulty is nestled in a heath landscape, which makes golfing at its peak particularly spectacular. But the Château de la Tournette golf club, just 10 minutes from Brussels, is also one of the most popular in Belgium. Two 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course are available in a beautiful park setting.
Why go far away when good things are so close? Belgium's proximity to Germany makes it particularly interesting for a short vacation. But even a longer stay is unlikely to be boring, as there is plenty to discover away from the fairways. A golf vacation in Belgium means enjoying diversity.
Of course, a trip to the wild and romantic Ardennes or to the North Sea beach is worthwhile.
For culture lovers, picturesque cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Liège or Ghent are a cultural treasure trove. Countless museums and art galleries, castles, old town houses in Art Nouveau architecture and the legendary antiques markets are undoubtedly worth a visit. Shopping in Belgium is truly a pleasure. The motto here is: Seek and you shall find. In the picturesque city centers, one store follows the next. Whether it's an elegant fashion boutique, jeweler or delicatessen, you'll find everything your heart desires.
Culinary delights are by no means limited to sweet temptations and spicy beer. The proximity to France is noticeable on the menu. In terms of population, Belgium boasts the most Michelin stars in the world. Countless gourmet restaurants, elegant cafés and cozy pubs provide for your physical well-being.
The climate in Belgium is somewhat milder than in Germany due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. The main travel season is from May to October.
Depending on the region, French, Flemish (Dutch) or German is spoken. However, regardless of the zone, it is more common in Belgium to communicate with visitors in English.
If you are traveling by car, it is better not to talk on the phone at the wheel, as this is punishable by hefty fines. There is also no mercy for parking offenders; cars are towed away mercilessly and at great expense.
Smoking in restaurants, public buildings, airports, train stations and trains as well as behind the wheel is prohibited in Belgium!
Brussels is served by all major airlines, and the capital can also be reached quickly and easily by ICE train from Frankfurt.
