About Arizona

Arizona (abbreviated to AZ) has been part of the USA since 1912 and is located in the southwest. It bears the nickname Grand Canyon State. A total of almost 6.4 million inhabitants live here, which corresponds to a population density of 22 inhabitants per km².

Playing golf in Arizona

With 300 days of sunshine a year, an average annual temperature of 22°C and 350 golf courses, Arizona is one of the most popular destinations for golf trips. 200 courses are located in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area alone, many of them with the typical desert character. Most of the courses are public courses, but some belong to resorts whose guests are given preference when booking courses. Green fees can be more than 200 euros and also depend on whether you are a club member or staying at the resort. But there are also cheaper courses with no less beautiful ambience, and the landscape does the rest. It is precisely the geographical contrasts that make golf trips to Arizona so attractive and rewarding.

The best time to travel to Arizona: January to April

Arizona is a desert state, characterized by a desert and semi-desert climate as well as a steppe climate in the north. This means that large temperature differences between day and night are just as much a part of Arizona's characteristic weather as - depending on the altitude - mild winters and hot summers. Rainfall averages between 100 mm and 500 mm per year, with the highest amount falling between July and November. The weather in the region is characterized by great contrasts. With almost 4,000 hours of sunshine a year, the city of Yuma is one of the sunniest places in the world, while Flagstaff to the north, at 2,135 m above sea level, is one of the most important winter sports resorts in the USA.
The main season runs from January to April, with temperatures starting at 20°C during the day and rising to 25°C in April. Light rainfall at the beginning and little to none towards the end of the high season characterize this ideal phase for golf trips to Arizona. The low season from May to mid-September is characterized by initially clear, dry and hot weather (up to around 38°C), with afternoon thunderstorms from August onwards and temperatures sometimes reaching the 40°C mark. The so-called mid-season from mid-September to the end of December offers the most favorable weather conditions for golfing, with daytime temperatures around 25°C and only a small amount of rain. However, the courses are renewed during this time. If you ask whether it is not too hot to play golf in Arizona, you will be advised to drink a lot and play quickly so that you can relax in the air-conditioned clubhouse afterwards.

Most of Arizona's 6.4 million inhabitants claim the following ancestry: 27.4% Mexican, 16.0% German, Irish (10.8%), English (10.1%) and Italian (4.6%, as of 2009). The southern and central parts of the country are Mexican, the north-east is Indian and the north is dominated by the descendants of British immigrants. The currency is the US dollar (exchange rate to the euro fluctuates around €1.35 per US dollar), but as is usual in the USA, all major credit cards are accepted.
Arizona is characterized by a variety of natural monuments and is home to three national parks. The best known is the Grand Canyon National Park, which was founded in 1919 and is also the most visited in the country with over 4 million visitors a year. The other two are Saguaro National Park (founded in 1933) and Petrified Forest National Park (founded in 1962). There is also the famous Monument Valley, which is under Navajo administration, Lake Powell, the second largest lake in the USA, and the horseshoe bend of the Colorado River, Horseshoe Bend.
