The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the union of a total of seven emirates located at the south-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula between the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the city of the same name is also the capital of the UAE and the second largest city in the country after Dubai. The young metropolis of around 1.5 million inhabitants is located on many natural and man-made islands of different sizes off the coast and is connected to the mainland by bridges.
Golf is playing an increasingly important role in Abu Dhabi, as in the UAE as a whole. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club has therefore hosted the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship since 2006, one of the most interesting golf tournaments on the European Tour, which traditionally takes place every year in January and attracts more and more spectators and top stars. Martin Kaymer celebrated his first ever Tour victory here and is the record winner with three titles to date.
As Abu Dhabi has only developed from a tranquil fishing village to a modern and elegant metropolis in the last few decades, the region does not have a long golfing tradition. However, with the development of the business and banking metropolis of Abu Dhabi, tourism has also found its way here. First-class hotels close to the beach promise an exceptional vacation in an elegant atmosphere. In addition to year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches and the vibrant cosmopolitan lifestyle, guests can also expect several well-maintained golf courses. Therefore, golfing in Abu Dhabi is an ideal vacation pleasure. It is home to some of the best and most famous golf courses in the Middle East, modern clubhouses and fresh greens with fantastic views will delight keen golfers and beginners alike. In 2012, Abu Dhabi received a prestigious award from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) and was named "Golf Destination of the Year - Africa and Gulf States". This alone shows the great importance of golf tourism for the region. One of the most famous courses is the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which is one of the most luxurious courses in the entire Arabian Peninsula and boasts 162 hectares of green with 27 championship holes.
A vacation in this preferred destination offers the opportunity to be active while playing golf in Abu Dhabi or to relax on the dream beach. In addition, numerous sights give interested guests an insight into the eventful history of the emirate and convey traditions and values. One of the outstanding sights is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which impresses with its colonnades, snow-white marble domes and the largest carpet and chandelier in the world.
Abu Dhabi has three attractive and high-quality championship golf courses:
In Abu Dhabi, visitors can expect an interesting mix of western modernity and oriental tradition. The religion is Islam, the national language is Arabic, although English is often spoken and understood. Dazzling Arabian markets, green oases and typical hospitality dominate the picture, as do the striking skyline, exclusive luxury hotels, leisure parks and golf courses. The overwhelming nature also offers unique impressions, turquoise blue water caresses snow-white beaches, meter-high sand dunes in the desert and the dense mangrove forests are well worth a visit. The best time to visit is from October to April, and you can expect sunshine all year round. However, the time difference must be taken into account: CET is +3 hours in Abu Dhabi.
Arab culture is not so close to Western culture that tourists cannot behave terribly badly. For example, women are not allowed to shake hands, men should avoid wearing shorts, and women should always keep their knees and shoulders covered by clothing; bikinis are only permitted on the beach. You should inform yourself thoroughly before entering the country, also about the strict customs regulations, so that you don't get into trouble due to ignorance. The cuisine in Abu Dhabi is based on Indian cuisine, while international cuisine can be found in the hotels.
The local currency in Abu Dhabi is the dirham, which is divided into 100 fils. Credit cards can be used in hotels and restaurants, and credit cards can be used to withdraw money from ATMs in the same way as EC or Maestro cards, although fees do apply. Numerous bureaux de change offer the opportunity to exchange into the local currency.
Travel to Abu Dhabi is usually by plane; Abu Dhabi International Airport is located around 30 kilometers east of the city center. You can expect a flight time of around 6 hours from Germany. There is a connection to the airport with public bus lines, as well as a shuttle service, minibuses and cabs.
Another option for getting to the airport is a cruise, as the port of Abu Dhabi is a popular destination for cruise ships. Regardless of whether you arrive by ship, plane or car, German nationals always need a passport for entry and exit, which must be valid for six months beyond the date of departure. When entering the country, you will receive a free visitor visa for tourists for 30 days, which can be extended for a further 30 days on request for a fee. In addition, there are special regulations for business people and certain tourist trips. If you lose your passport, you must request a replacement passport, without which you will not be able to leave the country.
Telephoning with a German cell phone is extremely expensive, it is recommended to buy a SIM card from a domestic operator immediately upon arrival, these are relatively inexpensive and available directly at the airport, it is sufficient to present your passport for registration, however, it is often only possible to pay with cash.
Vaccinations against tetanus, polio, diphtheria and hepatitis A are recommended, as well as hepatitis B if a long-term stay of more than three months is planned. Since summer 2012, there have been isolated cases of severe respiratory infections caused by a new coronavirus, although the situation is not classified as a concern by the World Health Organization.
