Ballyliffin Golf Club

Description

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact date when golf was first played in the Ballyliffin area. By the 1940s, clubs in Greencastle (1893), North West (1890) and the City of Derry (1912) were well established and it is said that the success of these clubs was instrumental in the official establishment of another club in Ballyliffin. Even before this, members of the British Army stationed at Leenan Fort had played golf sporadically at Pollen Green (Gerard Grant's land). Later in the 1920s and 1930s, others who had time to play also played here, mainly bankers from Carndonagh. In the mid-1940s, after the Second World War, the idea of building a club in the area became more and more popular. On April 2, 1947, a meeting of all those interested in building a golf club in Ballyliffin was held in Ballyliffin Hall. Dr. F.C. Friel made the official proposal to form the Ballyliffin Golf Club, which was seconded by P.J. McCarroll and eventually passed unanimously.
