Step Inside the Historic Thorpe Hall Drawing Room at Leeds Castle Golf Club

Golf aficionados and history buffs are in for a treat as the Leeds Castle Golf Club unveils the historic Thorpe Hall Drawing Room. This latest addition offers club members and visitors a chance to experience a slice of the glamorous lifestyle once enjoyed by Lady Baillie and her esteemed guests. The room is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, featuring intricate pine paneling that dates back to 1653. Originally part of Thorpe Hall near Peterborough, the furnishings found a new home when they were sold to pay death duties.

Upon arrival at Leeds Castle, the paneling was painted pea green and required meticulous restoration. Each panel had to be carefully stripped of paint and reassembled, akin to solving an elaborate jigsaw puzzle. To fit these ancient panels perfectly, the ceiling of the room was lowered and a new door was cut through the wall at the bay-window end. This transformation was then taken further in 1937, when Lady Baillie enlisted the expertise of designer Stéphane Boudin to redecorate Thorpe Hall and update its soft furnishings.
