Incredible Throwback: Sean McVeigh's Double Hole-in-One at Lurgan Golf Club
06/13/2024
Throw Back Thursday…Lurgan Golf Club Member and former green keeper the late Sean McVeigh had two holes in one while playing in a Saturday Competition way back in 1988. When Sean first joined the club he was given a handicap of 14 but soon got it down with hard work and determination to his lowest of 5. His first came at the old 3rd (now 12th) and the second hole in one was at the old 17th (now 8th). That day he was playing with Winston Hutchinson and Dennis Robinson. On both occasions Sean used his trusted 9 iron. This actually wasn't the first time Sean had a hole in one. In 1984 while playing with the late Graham Douglas he had one at the old 11th (now 2nd). In those days neither internet nor mobile communication were available to spread the news, everyone relied on the good old fashion newspaper and Sean’s achievement made the back pages of the Lurgan Mail and the Belfast Telegraph. Sports editor for the ‘Tele’ in those days was Jack Magowan and he wrote: ‘A hole-in-one in golf is something of a freak, but when it happens TWICE in the same round, it’s nothing short of a miracle. Now meet miracle maker Sean McVeigh, who hit his elusive bull’s eye double at the third and seventeenth holes during the Lurgan Golf Club’s handicap tournament won by Matt McAlinden. This feat has only been performed twice before in Ulster Golf- by Brian Little at Warrenpoint 16 years ago and before that by Sam Lawther (Carnalea) during a round at Bushfoot’. Most of us dream of getting a hole in one in any round but to do it twice certainly is amazing.
