Heavy rains and thunderstorms – that’s how we can summarize the first two rounds of the 2021 Memorial Tournament. The rain made the course a real test for the players and currently only 28 golfers are in the red numbers. Many players had to finish their second round on Saturday when the cut line was set. See below who are the three golfers who really surprised us by failing to make the weekend.

World number 28 Cameron Smith has been very consistent in the last couple of years and became a constant contender on the PGA Tour. The Australian already won once this season and posted several top 10s, most notable a shared 10th place at The Masters. Prior this week Smith has missed only one cut in his last 21! starts and it’s surprising he didn’t make the weekend at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The Australian played the course over par during the first two days and after rounds of 73 and 74 he missed the cut by one shot.
Matthew Fitzpatrick

Matthew Fitzpatrick secured his PGA Tour playing rights for this season after some strong finishes earlier this year. The Englishman, number 18 in the world, took a week off after the PGA Championship where he finished tied for 23rd. Fitzpatrick missed only one cut from nine appearances on the PGA Tour since the start of 2021. The damage this week was done on the first day when the Englishman played the course at three over par. This was followed by a level par 72 on the second day, but this was not enough to make the cut.

Joaquin Niemann is not the most popular name on the PGA Tour, but you will hardly find more consistent players out there. The last time the Chilean missed a cut was at THE NORTHERN TRUST last August, 20! tournaments ago. At Muirfield Village Niemann posted rounds 74 & 75 to finish in the group at five over par, two shots below the cut line.
