9 Interesting Facts: Porsche European Open
  1. The first edition of the Porsche European Open was played in 1978 at Walton Heath. It was won by the three-time European Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher who won the title after a playoff with Gil Morgan and Bobby Wadkins.
  2. Five times in tournament’s history the winner was decided after a playoff. For the last time extra holes were played in 2017 when Jordan Smith defeated Alexander Lévy to claim his lone European Tour title.
  3. Over the years the tournament has been played on nine different courses. The iconic K Club has been tournament host 13 times. More than any other course.
  4. Only four players have won the tournament more than once. These players are Lee Westwood, Per-Ulrik Johansson, Bernhard Langer and Gordon Brand Jnr.
  5. For sixth consecutive year the tournament will be played in Germany. Only one German player has won the tournament and his name is Bernhard Langer. The two-time Masters champion won the title in 1985 and 1995.
  6. The record for biggest margin of victory belongs to Mathias Grönberg. In 1998 the Swede won by 10 strokes over Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Phillip Price.
  7. The last player who managed to successfully defend his title is Lee Westwood. The Englishman ton the title back in 1999 and 2000 when the tournament was plated at The K Club.
  8. The last three editions of the tournament were won by English golfers. Jordan Smith won in Germany in 2017. Then in 2018 Richard McEvoy claimed his maiden European Tour title after a dramatic birdie on the last. This week Paul Casey will defend his title which he won in 2019. The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  9. There are four par 5’s on the back nine at Green Eagle Golf Courses this week. This promises a lot of drama till the very last shot.
